Norman Cherner was a pioneer in molded plywood. He designed the first molded plywood chair in 1958. His name became attached to the chair because he sued Plycraft over the right to name the chair after him.
The chair was named the “Cherner chair” and was very successful. But it wasn't until his children decided to relaunch his designs that the Cherner chair became a household name. The original Cherner chair was made out of molded plywood. Molded plywood is a type of laminated plywood that is pressed together under heat and pressure. It is stronger than solid plywood.
The Cherner chair was made with three layers of plywood. The bottom layer was 3/4 inch thick. The middle layer was 1/2 inch thick. And the top layer was 1/4 inch thick. These layers were glued together using a special adhesive.
Reissued in exacting detail from the original drawings and molds these classic stools are strong, lightweight and like the original, made entirely in the U.S.A. Available in classic walnut, natural walnut, clear beech, ‘Stella' Orange, ebony, white, red gum and any combination of finishes with custom finishes available.
Norman Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University Fine Arts Department and was an instructor at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. At the same time he also began his own practice, embarking on a lifetime exploration of architecture and furniture design.
Norman Cherner's books include: “Fabricating Houses from Component Parts” (1958) “How to Build a House for Less the $6,000” (1960), “Make your own Modern Furniture” (1953) and “How to Build Children's Toys and Furniture” (1954).
