Water Filters and Treatment Systems For Your Home

Looking for the right water treatment solution for your family? This guide can help you choose the perfect water filter for your home. Staying fit and healthy is a top priority for our modern-day lifestyle. It doesn’t matter whether you eat a balanced diet, are vegan, or are a non-vegetarian. Everyone needs pure and clean, filtered water.

The water filtration system in your home needs to eliminate contamination and also reduce the chemicals added to water for killing germs. But we don’t need filtered water just for drinking.

Clean water is needed for cooking, bathing, washing dishes, clothes, etc. The water needs to be less metallic and have less chlorine to avoid hair loss, skin problems, etc.

A good water filtration system will give you clean water whenever you turn on the tap, without costing you a fortune. Here’s how you choose the right one.

Culligan FM-15A Water Filter

Culligan makes some of the best faucet water filters on the market. This is a well trusted brand in water treatment that has been around for a long time. This filtration device is certified by the NSF.

  • Provide your family with visibly clean, great-tasting water for drinking, cooking and more
  • FEATURES: Reduces azine, chlorine, lindane, lead, particulates class I, turbidity while removing bad taste/odor; Carbon block filtration method; Flow rate of 0.5 gpm at 60 psi; 30-100 psi pressure range; 40-100°F temp range; Easy installation with no tools

Understanding Water Contamination

How Contaminated is Your Water?

How contaminated is the water that comes out of your tap? Because of poor water treatment, some areas might have extremely contaminated water. In such areas, you will need water filtration for all water outlets in your house.

However, if the water you get is not as contaminated, you might get a water filtration system for a few faucets, like in your kitchen and the bathroom. Installing a top faucet water filter in your kitchen might be all you need.

Type of Contamination

The type of filter you need depends on the kind of contamination you are trying to eliminate. Does your water come out cloudy? It might have sediments that make it muddy or give it a smell.

Sometimes contaminated water can look pristine clean. It still might be filled with harmful microbes that cause water-borne illnesses like diarrhea, typhoid, etc. They often treat such water with chemicals at the treatment plants. Drinking and using water with too many chemicals will harm your health.

Water might even have radioactive elements. In that case, the water will need a combination of treatment methods to make it useable. It is safer to get a water filtration system that takes care of different contamination.

How Much Filtered Water Will You Need?

Some households only need filtered water for drinking and cooking. Depending on the number of members living in the house, they can get a water filter with a lower capacity.

However, if your local water supply has highly contaminated water, you will need filtered water for every water-related function. A regular water filtration system may not be enough.

Hence, the type of filter also depends on how much water you need. If you need a large quantity of filtered water and need it fast, you will require a system that can provide that.

Choosing A Filtration System

Before buying a filtration system, you need to know what kind of water treatment method it uses. Depending on the type of contamination, you can decide the right system for your household. You can buy a system that uses one or a few of these filtration methods to purify water.

Sedimentation Treatment Method

This is an old method of water treatment that separates the water from the sediments that contaminate the water. Water is often forced through different filters, which catch some contamination.

Your sediment filter will eliminate larger particles and some bacteria. It may not be effective for removing maximum pollutants.

Distillation Method

Another old method of purifying water is water distillation. The water is heated until it evaporates. The vapors are collected in a condenser where it is cooled and collected.

Distillation is not enough for purifying water. Some contamination might remain in a concentrated form in the water. The water might become excessively acidic. The distilled water might need to be processed through another method of purification to make it usable.

Reverse Osmosis

This widely popular method is used by many water purifiers. The water is passed through a semi-permeable membrane which catches heavy contamination. This method is quite effective and is found in many filtration systems.

Deionization and Ion-exchange

These two methods work well for softening water and removing hard elements like iron and calcium. However, they are ineffective in removing bacteria and viruses.

Deionization is a chemical process that removes ‘electrically charged particles’ or ions from the water. Ion-exchange is another method of deionization, it exchanges ions to soften the water.

Activated Carbon

The activated carbon system uses blocks of carbon and granule to purify water. The carbon bonds with the water and removes microparticles. It is super effective for removing chlorine. It can also remove elements like magnesium, iron, etc. However, it cannot remove metalloids like arsenic.

Type of Water Filtration Systems

Your home fountains may not need filtered water, but your showers might. Whatever your water needs might be, you can find a variety of water filtration systems. All you have to do is choose one that suits your need.

Pitcher

These filters are like pitchers that you fill from the top. They work well for drinking water and are portable. Easy to use and moderately inexpensive, that allows you to replace it when needed without wasting too much money. However, the filtration system is less diverse.

Countertop & Under-sink

Countertop filters are directly connected to sinks but have a separate faucet that provides purified water. The filtration process is faster and hassle-free.

Under-sink filters have many components, including a water reserve that holds filtered water. The water goes through two or more methods of purification, often including sedimentation and reverse osmosis. However, you need to ensure you have enough space as it takes up some room.

Faucet Filters

Faucet filters are incredibly functional as they take up tiny space and can be attached to any faucets. Read the label before buying to check which filtration method is used for the filter.

These are very convenient, as you can attach them to the particular faucets you need purified water from. Depending on areas you need filtered water, you can attach them to each faucet and get filtered water anywhere in your house.

You can also find inbuilt faucet filters, but that might require some change in plumbing. Some inbuilt faucet filters can work very well with your showers, and these are called showerhead filters. The filtration system is installed inside the faucet, which makes it very convenient.

Types of Water Softeners

Sometimes you read of water softeners, sometimes you read of water conditioners, and sometimes, confusingly, the term is used interchangeably to describe the same product.

When you just want to remove scale-causing minerals from your water, it can be frustrating to be bombarded with many terms relating to the same water treatment system. What exactly do these terms mean? And how different from one another are they?

The difference between conditioners and salt-based water softeners is that salt-based softeners use a more thorough softening process that takes slightly longer.  While traditional softeners work more effectively than salt-free water softeners, there are several reasons why they’re not as efficient. You can find out more using this comparison.

Ultimately, there is no “best” option between these two hardness treating appliances. While each uses a different method to either remove calcium and magnesium or prevent them from sticking to surfaces, their end results are very much the same.

A water conditioning system works much more efficiently than a salt-based softener, as I mentioned above. This provides some huge maintenance benefits, as there’s virtually no work you’ll have to do to keep the system working as it should.

Water Treatment System For The Entire House

Imagine having a miniature water plant for your entire house. Installing such a system into your house requires changes in plumbing and can be pretty expensive. However, you can get purified water anywhere in your house.

These systems use various methods to remove microbes, metals, and chemicals from your water.

But they will need professional maintenance which is often required to ensure the quality of the water. Removing chlorine before the water reaches the pipes can make it vulnerable to the growth of microbes inside the lines.

Always read the label and learn more about the filter before deciding on one. Buying the right water filter means never having to buy bottled water again.

Depending on the contamination level, you can decide on the method of filtration your household needs. Choose a filter that doesn’t overcrowd your working space, is conveniently placed, and gives you the amount of purified water you need.
