How do I Reset the Filter on a Kenmore Refrigerator?

Kenmore refrigerators have a filter light indicator that alerts you when to change the filter in a Kenmore fridge. As you use the refrigerator dispenser, you will notice the light changing from green to yellow, then red. The green light indicates that your device is in good working condition, and when it changes to yellow, you need to prepare for a replacement. Finally, the indicator light will go red, notifying you that it is no longer functional.

If you own a Kenmore refrigerator, you need to know how to replace and reset its filter to continue enjoying safe drinking water and ice. But first:

What Tools Do I Need to Change the Filter?

Changing the water filter in a Kenmore refrigerator is quite straightforward. All you need to accomplish the task getting the right device for your refrigerator model. Secondly, you need to identify the location of the filtration equipment in your freezer. Depending on your Kenmore model, it will be located on the top inside the refrigerator or underneath the doors on the lower part.

Steps for Kenmore water filter change

In this section we will take you through the process of changing a filter step-by-step:

Purchase the right filter

To identify the suitable filtration device for your refrigerator, you can check for the machine model number on the manual or inside the refrigerator wall. You can then use the model number to get a tool that matches the device. Remember, not all models will work on your refrigerator; thus, you should get suitable replacement water filters for Kenmore.

Locate the filter

The next step is to identify the location of the filtration chamber in your refrigerator. The user manual will always have these details, but if you have a smart fridge, check at the far end of the top shelf to the left. Side-by-side full-length door refrigerators have their filtration devices at the top right corner. And if you have a two-door refrigerator with a freezer at the bottom, the device should be located in the lowest compartment.

Open the filter compartment

To access the old device, you should pull or press the button or tab open, depending on the refrigerator model.

Remove the old filter

Hold, twist it counterclockwise, and pull it out. It should loosen at a quarter turn. For some refrigerator designs, you don't need to rotate the filter; you can pull it out.

Unwrap the new device

Remove the new filter wrapping and take off the cap on one end. You will see the port that connects to the refrigerator.

Fit in the new device

The port on the filter should go inside the refrigerator. Once you place it inside the compartment in line with the threading, turn a quarter clockwise to secure it in place. Once it is well-fitted, close the case.

Press reset

After replacing a filter, you should reset the light if it remains yellow or red. To change the light to green, you should press the reset button for three seconds for the machine to detect the new device. If it is undetected, try taking it out and fitting it back. The reset button is often located in or outside the refrigerator door.

How Often Should You Replace Kenmore Fridge Water Filter?

A new refrigerator filtration device should not go for more than six months. In some cases, it may require earlier replacement if it fails before the lapse of the expected period. You will notice changes in your drinking water, such as color, smell, reduced water pressure, and low ice production. If you see either of these, you will need to change your water filtration tool even if it hasn't been used for the stipulated period or the refrigerator hasn't indicated so.

Summing up

Changing a water filter may feel intimidating at first, but once you do, it becomes easier. A filtration device is critical to your household health as it ensures the water you consume is always safe. Remember, a worn-out filter can be a health hazard as it acts as a breeding site for bacteria.
