Matthias Pliessnig is an artist that continues to challenge us with what is wood versus what is furniture. His latest designs are stimulating wooden benches woven by hand using oak and ash. The detail of these works reminds me of hand-crafted wicker where the meticulous pattern of weaving creates intricate detail. In this case, however, we are talking about shaping hardwoods as opposed to wicker which is an amazing feat. These pieces will be on display at the Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia from September 1 – October 5.
